The BBC News Health Reporter, Philippa Roxby reports on the successes being seen in the UK by providing iPads to children with autism.
Not only are the children benefiting from the iPads but the development of some innovative apps has shown the true power of the device.
Richard Mills, head of research at Research Autism and the National Autistic Society, says the technology is an opportunity to take “a huge step forward in our understanding of autism”.But he also showed caution:
‘Don’t expect miracles. Technology can revolutionise the way children with autism communicate, but not in all cases.
Independent touchscreen apps look very promising but they are sometimes just a slick way of using flash cards.
Parents need to approach this sensibly and methodically.’
The interactive touch features of todays mobile devices provide many more opportunities for development than many people realise.
It is great to hear these stories of success and we hope that it motivates more innovative development in the future.
